What Makes Glassine So Special?

Ah, glassine—she may look delicate, but don’t let that silky, semi-transparent beauty fool you. This paper packs a serious punch when it comes to functionality and eco-friendliness, which is why it's a firm favourite in both the crafting and packaging world. Here are some reasons why this product is so special.

Glassine Envelopes to use in Craft Projects

Water and Air Resistant:

This type of paper isn’t waterproof (no diving into puddles, please!), it does do a fantastic job of keeping out everyday moisture and air. That makes it ideal for protecting delicate die cuts, photos, or those tiny embellishments you’ve lovingly curated. Think of it as a little breathable shield for your crafty treasures.

Grease Resistant

This is where it really shines! Originally loved by bakers for wrapping buttery pastries and cookies. If you're storing wax seals, adhesive embellishments, or inked-up tags, this paper will help keep things neat and clean—no sticky residue, no smudges.

Biodegradable + Compostable

And here’s the cherry on top: glassine is kind to the earth. It’s 100% recyclable and compostable, making it a dream come true for sustainable crafters. So, while you’re making beautiful things, you’re also making a greener choice—how fabulous is that?

Where You Might Have Seen Glassine Before:

This materiel has been quietly doing its thing behind the scenes for decades—and once you know what it is, you’ll start spotting it everywhere.

For starters, stamp collectors have been fans of glassine forever. Those crisp, semi-transparent envelopes are perfect for protecting delicate postage stamps without sticking, tearing, or smudging. They’re archival-friendly and non-abrasive—basically, a collector’s best friend.

Entomologists (that’s the fancy word for bug collectors!) also swear by it. They use it to store and transport delicate insect specimens safely. It’s smooth, lightweight, and gentle, making it ideal for tiny wings and fragile bodies.

Gardeners, too, have discovered its charm—I personally love using glassine envelopes to store seeds. It keeps them dry, sorted, and easy to label, all while letting you peek at what’s inside. Super handy come planting season!

And next time you’re at a café, pay attention to how that slice of cake or buttery croissant is wrapped—it might just be snuggled up in a sheet of grease-resistant glassine paper. Stylish and functional.

And of course... let’s not forget about us crafty types! Crafters adore glassine for so many reasons. We tuck it into junk journals as pockets, use it for layering in scrapbook layouts, create dreamy DIY envelopes, or package up mini embellishments and ephemera for swaps and happy mail. It adds that subtle, crinkly texture and vintage flair that’s just chef’s kiss in any project.

Once you start using glassine in your craft stash, trust me—you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it! ✨📬🌱

Why We Love It in the Craft World

This materiel is a total gem when it comes to paper crafting. Its semi-transparency makes it perfect for layering—you can tuck a pretty paper or vintage photo behind it for a peek-a-boo effect. It’s also gorgeous stamped on, stitched into mini albums, or folded into envelopes and pockets for junk journals.

And the best part? You can feel good about using it. Since it’s biodegradable and recyclable, it fits beautifully into an earth-conscious crafting lifestyle.

    Glassine Technique Ideas!

Glassine paper isn’t just pretty—it’s packed with potential! From inky experiments to layered textures and dreamy pockets, this versatile material plays beautifully with all sorts of mediums and here are a few ideas.

    1. Embossing on Glassine

Did you know that you can use your embossing folders on this type of paper? If you love adding depth and dimension to your projects, this technique is a game-changer! When you run glassine through an embossing folder, the pressure breaks through the paper’s waxy coating, revealing a lighter, almost weathered effect on the raised areas of your design. This subtle yet striking contrast makes the embossed pattern stand out beautifully, giving your project an aged, distressed look that’s perfect for vintage, grunge, or mixed-media styles.

Want to take it a step further? Try lightly sanding the raised areas after embossing to enhance the effect even more. You can also ink over the embossed design for added depth—Distress Ink or Archival Ink work great for this! The ink will settle into the exposed fibers where the coating has been broken, creating a gorgeous blend of texture and color. Experiment with different embossing folder patterns to see how it reacts—it’s such a fun and easy way to add an extra layer of interest to your creations!

    2. Inking on Glassine

Let’s dive into inking for a minute—Try using Distress Ink with an ink blending tool on kraft glassine, and prepare to be amazed. The beauty of this technique is that the ink will soak into the areas where the coating has been broken or scratched.

This gives it an incredibly gorgeous, aged look that adds so much texture and depth to your projects. The contrast between the smooth, shiny surface and the distressed areas creates this beautiful, weathered effect that looks so organic and authentic. It's the perfect way to add character to your cards, mini albums, or journal pages. Seriously, it’s so satisfying to watch the ink react with the paper—like magic! Give it a try, and you’ll be hooked!

    3. Stamping on Glassine

You absolutely can stamp on this product, and it's such a fun way to add a unique touch to your projects! I highly recommend using archival ink because it's permanent, ensuring your design stays crisp and sharp. However, here’s the catch—since this is a coated paper, the ink won’t dry naturally like it would on regular cardstock. That’s right, it will stay wet on the surface, which means you'll need to give it a little extra care.

To avoid smudging, you’ll want to either heat emboss it with clear embossing powder or let it sit for a while to fully dry. If you're in a hurry, using a heat tool can speed up the process and make sure your stamped image stays put. The cool part is that when you use archival ink, you’re left with a rich, defined image that pops against the smooth, slightly translucent glassine surface, adding an elegant, vintage vibe to your projects. It’s such a great way to take your creations to the next level!

    4. Make Glassine Paper Flowers

Start by die-cutting your the paper using a floral die. You can cut multiple layers at once—so efficient! Give your flowers a good crumple! If you’re using a paper punch instead of a die, punch the shape first before wrinkling—otherwise, it won’t go through. Dip a dry brush into Perfect Pearls powders or create a colour background using Nuvo Shimmer Powders. You can also use Distress Oxide Inks.

Dry using your heat tool until the glassine takes on that shiny, wet look. This step embeds the Perfect Pearls into the paper, creating a luminous, pearlescent finish that won’t rub off. It’s seriously stunning! Stack three flowers together, alternating the petal shapes for dimension. Staple them using a Tiny Attacher or secure them with a brad (glue can be tricky on glassine because of the coating). Add a button or a type charm to the center, then scrunch them up for some beautiful, dimensional, distressed goodness.

    4. Printing on Glassine

Want to print on this paper? You totally can—with an inkjet printer! But be careful—the ink will still be wet when it comes out. Just like with stamping, you’ll need to heat-set it for a few seconds. Once that shiny, wet look appears, turn off the heat, and boom—your image is now permanent. The semi-translucent nature makes it perfect for layering over printed or stamped backgrounds. And if you wrinkle it? Instant vintage effect!

    The Heat Set Trick

Ever had ink sitting stubbornly on the surface, refusing to dry? Don’t stress—there’s a nifty little trick that feels like pure crafting sorcery.

Just grab your heat tool and give the glassine a gentle blast for a few seconds. You’ll notice something interesting: the surface starts to look a bit shiny, almost like it’s melting or getting wet. It might even seem like the paper is reacting strangely—but hang tight! That’s not damage—it’s just the natural coating rising to the surface in response to the heat.

Here’s the magical part: once you switch off your heat tool and let it cool down, the shine settles, the paper goes right back to its usual silky self, and your ink or stamping is now permanently set into the paper. No more smudges, no more waiting around. The heat actually helps the ink embed itself into the fibers and set.

This trick is especially handy if you’re doing mixed media work or layering stamped pieces in junk journals, mini albums, or art journaling pages. It lets you get that beautiful stamped or inked look without the frustration of long drying times or accidental smears.

Just be sure to keep the heat moving and don’t overdo it—glassine is tough, but like any good crafting supply, it appreciates a little gentle handling.

    Kraft Glassine Ideas:

    1. Flower Pocket Envelopes

Create delicate little flower-shaped pockets. Run the envelope through your embossing machine.  These tiny glassine flower pockets can hold small tags, journaling spots, or even a little confetti for extra texture. Add a ribbon, button, or a fabric embellishment in the center for a little extra pop. It’s a lovely, interactive embellishment that adds dimension to your page!

    2. Tags with Stamped Details

Cut small tag shapes out of kraft glassine and stamp them with different designs—think floral stamps, vintage scripts, or even phrases that match the theme of your layout. You can ink the edges to give them a distressed, worn look. Attach them to your layout with a piece of twine or ribbon through a small hole punched in the top. These glassine tags work great for adding a bit of texture and layering to your page while giving it that soft, semi-transparent look that’s so eye-catching and unique!

Both of these ideas will add a special touch to your scrapbook layouts and other projects bringing texture, interest, and a little bit of unexpected beauty with glassine!

    3. Make Paper Flowers

Start by die-cutting your kraft glassine using a floral die.

Once you have finished stamping  use your heat tool until the glassine takes on that shiny, wet look.
