Creative Day - Craft Project Instructions: "Among the Planets" Mixed Media Cards

January's Sunday creative day,  we gathered at Hubertus Club, Luddenham for a day of crafting after the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season. Our project this month was a pretty mixed media card. Among the Planets." It was one of those days where everyone let their creativity flow, and by the end, we were all thrilled with the gorgeous, celestial-inspired cards we made.

This project is a mix of shimmer, texture, and layering techniques, using a beautiful printable of vibrant planets as the star of the show. With Nuvo Shimmer Powders, distress oxides, and some clever stenciling and stamping, we transformed watercolor paper into stunning planetary works of art.

You can find most of the products in the shop.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Create the Background

  1. Lay your watercolor paper flat on your workspace.
  2. Sprinkle Nuvo Shimmer Powders onto the paper.
  3. Lightly spritz water over the powders to activate the shimmer and create a planetary-style background.
  4. Use a heat gun to dry the background thoroughly.

Step 2: Add Texture

  1. Take the texture paste (white) and Cadence relief paste (pink and blue).
  2. Use a plastic tablecloth as a stencil by laying it over the watercolor paper.
  3. Apply the texture pastes through the stencil to create patterns. This adds dimension and uniqueness to your card.
  4. Dry the paste with a heat gun.

Step 3: Stamping Details

  1. Once the base is dry, use a script and splatter stamp to add detailed elements to your background.
  2. Use black Distress Oxide ink for a bold contrast.
  3. Allow the ink to set for a moment before continuing.

Step 4: Prepare the Planets and Sentiments

  1. Fussy cut the planets from your printable.
  2. Ink the edges of each planet with black ink to give them depth.
  3. Select and cut out your word sentiments and keep them ready.

Step 5: Arrange the Composition

  1. Arrange the planets on your card until you are satisfied with their layout.
  2. Before adhering, layer sari threads and cotton threads behind the planets for a textured look.
  3. Use 3D foam tape to adhere some of the planets to the card, giving them a raised effect.

Step 6: Final Details

  1. Attach the word sentiment to the card and use a black gel pen or paint to outline it, making it pop.
  2. Add sequins using liquid adhesive to create additional sparkle.
  3. Finish the design by adding mixed media stones for a planetary effect.
