Many people have a few of these tucked away in the craft stash, sometimes not exactly knowing how they can be used. (Or just forget they have them). Can you relate?

If you also happened to enter the search engine terms such as: scrapbooking buttons or flair badges and came across this post, this blog post is for you to learn about how they can be very useful products as well as provide some great ideas on how you can use them.

What are Flair Badges?

So what are badges, also called buttons, in scrapbooking? These little and often cute inconspicuous circles with a diameter of approx. 2.5 cm is a kind of plastic and metal decorative button. They are very durable, have an interesting, shiny coating, and are decorated with a picture, graphics, or a fragment of a pattern. There are self-adhesive ones and those that you have to stick with glue to the place you choose. They can be used to decorate cards, albums, layouts, and other handmade works.

Some Ideas on How to Use Flair Badges

All right, so now you know what they are, you may be wondering why crafters love them so much? These small circles are perfect for decorative compositions of paper works. There are at least a few reasons:
  • They are relatively flat, so you can use them wherever you want to place some decorations, but you can't add too convex decorations. Such as projects that are not flat.

  • They have a pleasant to the touch, smooth and shiny surface, so they introduce an interesting texture to handmade work and reflect light beautifully.

  • They are durable and resistant to external factors: they do not break, do not bend, do not crack, do not fade.

Using Flair Badges on Scrapbooking Layouts.

Layering a small tag on top of another can instantly add a delightful sense of depth and charm to your design. It’s an easy yet effective way to create visual interest while keeping the overall look playful and engaging.

For example, the 'Super Kid' flair badge in the layout below is a standout element that ties the design together beautifully. Its vibrant color coordinates perfectly with the rest of the palette, blending effortlessly with the floral embellishment to create a cohesive and polished look.

Scrapbooking with Flair Badges - Pirate Layout

The Flair Badge 'Story Time' is perfect for this Scrapbook Layout, which is a School Book Week Parade. Braedon loved to dressing up as a Pirate.

The Flair Badge 'Story Time' is the perfect finishing touch for this vibrant scrapbook layout, which celebrates the fun and excitement of a School Book Week Parade. The badge not only ties in seamlessly with the theme but also helps highlight the special occasion in a creative and eye-catching way.

My son, Braedon had an absolute blast dressing up as a pirate, fully embracing the character with his adventurous spirit and playful costume.

Buttons with inscriptions save us in a situation where a stamped, cardboard or printed inscription would disturb the composition of the work or 'just not look right' However, there is always a place for a small, round flair button with a little word which depicts the message we want to convey. In the layout below. I used the little flair badge with the word 'Adventure'.  It's just a nice addition and breaks up the photos.

I have mentioned that you can use scrapbooking badges to decorate your projects to add that little bit of extra dimension. The creativity of crafters shows however, that you can use badges in many other different ways. Sometimes a decorative button plays the role of a thematic scrapbook, other times it could be used to close a scrapbooking mini album or hand made folio.

Popular Flair Buttons

Although there are many different motifs and patterns on a Flair Button there are some really popular ones such as:

The universal clock, symbolised by the timeless image of a clock face, is a powerful and versatile motif that holds deep meaning across a wide range of themes and occasions. Its association with the passage of time makes it a perfect element to include in projects related to birthdays and anniversaries, where it beautifully represents the celebration of milestones and the journey through life. By incorporating a clock face into these designs, you can subtly emphasise the significance of cherished moments and how they mark the progression of time.

The heart motif is an incredibly popular design element, known for its universal symbolism of love, affection, and warmth. It fits seamlessly into a wide range of creative projects, making it an ideal choice whenever you want to express deep emotions or highlight meaningful relationships. Whether you’re documenting a romantic milestone, celebrating family bonds, or simply conveying feelings of care and appreciation, the heart design offers a powerful visual representation of love in all its forms.

Another popular type of flair button often features a single word that conveys a powerful message about a specific feeling, emotion, or sentiment tied to the layout. These buttons act as a creative and meaningful way to add depth to your scrapbook pages, capturing the essence of a moment in a single, impactful word. Whether it's "Joy," "Love," "Adventure," or "Celebrate," these flair buttons become a focal point that helps to express the mood or theme of the layout, complementing the visual elements while enhancing the storytelling.

One of the most beloved types of flair buttons are those featuring floristic motifs. These buttons, adorned with delicate flowers, leaves, or other botanical designs, add a natural, elegant touch to any scrapbook layout. These buttons become eye-catching embellishments that beautifully extend and enhance the overall floral composition of the page. They bring a sense of harmony to your design, seamlessly blending with other elements like patterned papers, layered tags, or dimensional stickers.
