Ingredients

  • 1 store-bought chocolate sponge cake
  • 1 chocolate muffin
  • 1 cup chocolate icing
  • Black pipe cleaners (about 8)
  • Icing eyes (available at craft or baking stores)
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips (for melting)
  • Optional: Smarties for decoration

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Chocolate Sponge

  1.  Add another layer of chocolate icing if  using a store-bought chocolate sponge cake,

Step 2: Ice the Muffin

  1. Ice the Muffins: Using a spatula or a knife, spread a generous layer of chocolate icing around the muffin (each side)  Make sure the icing is thick enough to hold the spider in place!

Step 3: Create the Spider Legs

  1. Prepare the Legs: Cut each black pipe cleaner into four equal lengths for each spider (you’ll need eight legs).

  2. Insert the Legs: Carefully insert eight pipe cleaner pieces into the iced muffin, positioning them to look like spider legs. Bend the middle of the pipe cleaner to create the shape of leg.

Step 4: Add the Eyes

  1. Attach the Eyes: Use a small amount of chocolate icing to stick two icing eyes onto the top of the muffin, just under the first set of legs.

Step 5: Create the White Chocolate Web

  1. Melt the White Chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the white chocolate chips in 30-second intervals, stirring in between until smooth. Be careful not to overheat!

  2. Create the Web: Transfer the melted white chocolate into a piping bag or a resealable plastic bag. Cut a small hole in one corner of the bag. Pipe a spiral onto the muffin and then extend lines outward to create a web effect. You can also make small loops between the lines for added detail. Allow to set.

Step 6: Assemble the Cake

  1. Remove the Web: Using a spatula remove the web from the plastic bag and place on top of the chocolate sponge.

  2. Top with Spiders: Place the iced muffin spider on top of the sponge using extra icing between the layers to secure in place.

  3. Add Red Smarties: Add red smarties to the centre of the spider.

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy!

  1. Serve: Once all the cake is decorated, your spooky spider cake is ready to be enjoyed!
