Mixed Media Mushrooms - Creative Day Project June 2024

The theme for the make and take project at our June Creative Day was mushrooms, and we enjoyed creating our own painted mixed media mushrooms. The results were fantastic! 

Materials Needed:

• A4 paper sheets
• Acrylic paints in various colors
• Paintbrushes
• Heat gun or hair dryer
• Mushroom templates (pre-created)
• Pencil
• Scissors
• Fine-tip markers or pens
• Protective covering for your workspace
• Optional: apron or old clothes

Paint the A4 Paper:

Select a few colors of acrylic paint that you like.

Use paintbrushes to paint the A4 paper in different patterns and color combinations. Don’t worry about being perfect; the goal is to create interesting and varied backgrounds. Once you’re done painting, use a heat gun or hair dryer to dry the paint quickly. Ensure the paint is completely dry before proceeding to the next step.

Prepare the Mushroom Templates:

If you don’t have pre-created templates, you can draw mushroom shapes on a separate piece of paper or download the mushroom templates using (Download Mushroom PDF). Please note there is a small cost for the download.

Trace and Cut Out the Mushrooms:

Place your painted A4 paper face down on your workspace. Using a pencil, trace the mushroom templates onto the back of the painted paper. Carefully cut out the mushroom shapes using scissors.

Mix and Match Mushroom Pieces:

Separate the tops and bottoms of the mushrooms. Mix and match the tops and bottoms to create unique color combinations and designs.

Add Details and Effects:

Use fine-tip markers or pens to hand-draw mushroom markings, such as gills and spots, on the mushroom pieces. For added effect, splatter some paint onto the mushrooms. To do this, dip a paintbrush in a contrasting color and flick it over the mushrooms to create splatter patterns.

Assemble and Display:

Once you are satisfied with your mushrooms, you can glue them onto a new piece of paper to create a mixed media artwork. Arrange the mushrooms in a pleasing composition and allow any additional paint or glue to dry completely.
