Journalling Apps: A Comprehensive Comparison for 2024

Journaling is a powerful practice that can help you organise your thoughts, express your emotions, track personal growth, and boost your overall well-being. In the digital age, journaling apps have become increasingly popular, offering convenience and versatility. 

Here are a few digital apps that I recommend, most I have used. My favourite apps are Journi Blog, (which we use while travelling to document our trips while we're travelling), Day One, and Zinnia apps. The Zinnia app is one I have subscribed to and pay a monthly fee as I just love what you can create with the templates and images. 

Day One:

Day One is more than just a journaling app; it's a dynamic and comprehensive memory-keeping tool. Whether you're capturing life's milestones, recording your daily reflections, or relishing in the nostalgia of past adventures, Day One is your trusty companion on the journey of preserving memories and expressing your authentic self. 

Day One stands out for its exceptional user experience and thoughtful design. The interface is very easy to use.   The app blends the traditional practice of journaling with modern technology, allowing users to capture not only text but also images, creating a visually appealing journaling experience. 

I have used Day One to document my days for my December Daily albums.

Penzu:

Penzu is a secure journaling app that has a user-friendly interface that makes it easy to record your thoughts and experiences.

For those seeking inspiration or structure in their journaling practice, Penzu offers daily prompts and reminders. These thoughtful cues encourage regular journaling and help you explore different aspects of your life.

Beyond journaling,  Penzu serves as an excellent digital memory keeper. It allows you to categorise entries, tag them for easy retrieval, and provides an excellent search function. This makes it simple to revisit your memories whenever you desire.

Penzu offers both a free basic version and a premium subscription, catering to various user needs. What sets Penzu apart is its strong commitment to privacy, offering end-to-end encryption, password protection, and automatic logouts to keep your journal entries secure.

Goodnotes:

Goodnotes is an exceptional note-taking app designed for Apple users seeking a digital alternative to handwritten notes and journaling. These apps provide a natural and fluid handwriting experience with stylus support, making them ideal for users who prefer the tactile feel of pen and paper. 

GoodNotes and Notability offers advanced features like annotating PDFs, importing images, and organizing notes into notebooks. 

While both apps have a one-time purchase cost and don't require ongoing subscriptions, they do come with slightly different functionalities. Goodnotes excels in organisation and file management, making it a top choice for those with extensive note collections. 

Notability:

Notability, on the other hand, stands out for its ease of use and versatility, making it a great option for students, professionals, and digital journal enthusiasts. Whether you choose GoodNotes or Notability, you'll have a powerful tool at your fingertips for handwritten note-taking and journaling on your Apple device.

Features of both:

Offers a natural handwriting experience with stylus support on iOS.

Paid apps with no ongoing subscription fees.

Allows handwritten entries and importing images.

Excellent for those who prefer handwritten notes and drawing.

Shortfalls of both:

Limited cross-platform availability, handwriting recognition may not be perfect.

Evernote:

Evernote is a versatile and widely used note-taking app that caters to individuals with diverse organisational needs. Its intuitive and user-friendly interface makes it accessible to both beginners and seasoned users. While Evernote isn't specifically a journaling app, its flexibility allows you to adapt it to your journaling needs. 

It offers a free version with certain limitations and a premium subscription option that unlocks advanced features. Evernote excels in its ability to capture various types of content, including text, images, web clippings, and audio notes. 

The app's robust search functionality, cross-platform compatibility, and cloud-based syncing make it an excellent choice for those who want to keep their journal accessible across multiple devices. Although it may lack some of the specialised features found in dedicated journaling apps,

Diary (Android):

Diary for Android is a straightforward and user-friendly journaling app designed specifically for Android users. Its uncomplicated interface makes it easy to create and maintain a digital journal, making it accessible even for those new to journaling or digital note-taking. 

While it may not offer the extensive feature set of some other journaling apps, Diary excels in its simplicity and efficiency, making it a suitable choice for individuals who want a no-frills solution for daily journaling on their Android devices. 

It allows you to add photos to your entries, enhancing the visual aspect of your journal. Despite its simplicity, Diary fulfills the core purpose of journaling – providing a space for self-expression, reflection, and personal growth, all within the familiar Android environment

While Daylio may not offer the same level of detailed text entries as traditional journaling apps, its strength lies in its ability to help users recognize patterns in their emotions and activities over time. With customizable icons and a visually appealing interface, 

Daylio makes mood tracking both enjoyable and insightful. It's a great choice for those who want to gain better insight into their emotional well-being and daily habits while maintaining a minimalistic journaling approach.

There are many ways you can use the Zinnia app and it happens to be one of my favourites. (I have opted to use the paid version)
