Behind the Scenes - New Biodegradable Packaging at Scrap of Your Life
I have been on the hunt for a different type of packaging materials for some time now. Previously been using plastic post satchels for small orders and anything above 12 x 12 in size which is usually scrapbooking paper has been sent via Postpak envelope. I have decided to go for something a little more environmentally friendly and for me its also a more ecnomical option.
Oh an one other thing, they come in pink which makes for prettier packaging and a bit of change I think.!!
After some online research I found a website called HERO and decided to use their packaging options.
The bags come in 3 sizes and and feel like plastic, but they're not. They area 100% biodegradable, home-compostable and are made from 70-80% PBAT (a co-polymer that is completely biodegradable) and 20-30% PLA (which is a fancy way of saying cornstarch).
In a commercial compostable environment, it will break-down within 90 days. At home, it may take up to 120 days.
Ideally, these should be sent to composting facilities to be properly broken down and composted. If you are in Australia, please CLICK HERE to find a composter near you. You can also ask your local council if they can provide a composting green bin for you.
HOME COMPOSTING
To compost them at home, it’s best to cut them up and place in your compost bin (as “brown” materials). These will completely break down within 90 days in a compostable environment.
You can check out the FAQS on the HERO website.
