Easy Card Tutorial using Distress Oxides, Vellum and Die Cuts

During our September Creative Day, we had a wonderful time experimenting with a fun and simple inking technique to create beautiful handmade cards. The activity was a hit, and everyone loved how easy it was to achieve such stunning results.

The best part? You only need a few basic supplies to get started: some Tim Holtz distress inks, white cardstock, vellum, and a few die sets and of course a little bling.

Whether you're a seasoned crafter or just starting out, this technique is perfect for anyone looking to add a unique touch to their cards. Below, you'll find a complete list of materials, step-by-step instructions and some images to help you create this lovely card on your own.

Materials Needed:

  • White A4 cardstock
  • Distress inks (choose 3 colors that complement each other)
  • Sizzix Flower Die Set
  • Sizzix Border Die (choose a border die of your choice)
  • Vellum
  • Adhesive
  • Paper trimmer
  • Embossing folder
  • Die-cutting/embossing machine (e.g., Cuttlebug or Big Shot)
  • Scissors
  • Craft mat (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cardstock:

    • Take a sheet of white A4 cardstock.
    • Cut the cardstock in half lengthwise using a paper trimmer. You should now have two pieces.
  2. Apply Distress Ink:

    • Choose three distress ink colors that work well together.
    • Lightly smear each ink in a downward motion using a soft hand to avoid making the colors too dark. Leave some white space between colors for a softer effect.

  3. Cut the Cardstock:

    • Once the ink has dried, cut the inked cardstock in half to create two pieces measuring 6 x 4 inches each.
  4. Create Card Elements:

    • Set aside one of the 6 x 4-inch pieces to use as the card base.

    • Use the other piece to die-cut flowers using the Sizzix Flower Die Set. Set the die-cut flowers aside for embellishing the card later.
  5. Emboss the Card Base:

    • Place the card base into an embossing folder.

    • Run it through the die-cutting/embossing machine to create an embossed pattern on the card base.
  6. Add Vellum Detail:

    • Take a sheet of vellum and run it through the Big Shot  machine using a border die of your choice.

    • Adhere the vellum border to the left-hand side of the card base.
  7. Assemble the Card:

    • Place the die-cut flowers onto the card, layering the leaves and flowers together.

    • Adhere the flowers securely to the card base using adhesive.

    • Place the die-cut flowers onto the card, arranging them as desired.

  8. Add a Sentiment:

    • Stamp a sentiment of your choice and lightly ink the edges and adhere to the card with 3D tape. .
