Starting something new....A Scrapbooking Business
My crafting journey really kicked off after I had my second child. At the time, life was a bit of a whirlwind—I was working full-time as a Public Servant with the Australian Department of Defence.
Life was busy, but something inside me was craving a creative outlet—a little “me time” that didn’t involve everyday work life, kids and housework.
Then in 2004, a friend of mine suggested hosting a Creative Memories party at my house. You know the ones—everyone brings a handful of photos, you get a little demo, and before you know it, you’re sticking paper to cardstock like a seasoned pro. I still remember how we were shown how to cut photos (gasp!), add a few basic embellishments, and put together a 12 x 12 scrapbook layout.
Let’s be honest—those early layouts were simple. Like...very simple. A sticker here, a corner-rounder there, and maybe a squiggle of journalling if you were feeling brave. But oh, wasn’t it wonderful? There was something incredibly satisfying about telling a story with photos and paper. It felt like something clicked. I remember thinking, “Yes—this is it. This is the hobby I’ve been looking for.”
Before discovering paper crafting, I had dabbled in all sorts of creative pursuits. I gave folk art a whirl (lots of chickens and roses), tried my hand at paper tole (hello, tiny scissors!), and even ventured into the world of leadlighting (which, fun fact, is far more dangerous than scrapbooking—hot soldering irons, anyone?). While they were fun at the time, none of those crafts really stuck. I enjoyed the process, but I didn’t feel that spark… that deep-down, gotta-do-this feeling.
But with scrapbooking? Oh, the spark was real. I was hooked.
From Hobby to (Maybe) a Business?
So, fast forward a few years—my little on had grown a bit, my style has evolved (thank goodness!), and I’ve accumulated more paper than a small office supply store. And now, I find myself wondering: Could I turn this passion into a business?
The thought keeps circling around in my mind. I mean, how amazing would it be to share my love of crafting with others—not just as a hobby, but as something bigger? Maybe teach classes, sell products I love, host workshops or retreats... the possibilities are endless (and oh-so-exciting).
Of course, the practical side of me is already making a list:
-
How do I register a business name?
-
Where do I source suppliers?
-
Can I build a website?
-
What about setting up a forum or gallery to connect with other crafters?
It’s a lot, but honestly? It sounds like fun. The kind of fun that gets my brain buzzing with ideas and my heart doing a little happy dance.
And the cherry on top? My husband is totally on board. He’s my quiet cheerleader in the background—always supportive, never phased when another craft haul package turns up on the doorstep (well... mostly 😉). He says, “Give it a go,” and I think... maybe I really should.
Now for the Big Question… What Do I Call It?
Of course, no business can begin without the perfect name, right? Something that captures the heart of what I do—the stories, the creativity, the community. Do I go sentimental? Something funny?
Because who knows? This could be the beginning of something truly wonderful.
If you’ve ever stood on the edge of a creative dream and thought, “Could I really do this?”—just know you’re not alone. Whether you’re just starting your first scrapbook page or thinking of turning your hobby into a business, there’s always room at the craft table for one more.
Til next time!
